MANCHESTER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL FUNDING VICTIM OF GOVERNMENT CUTS The Manchester International Festivals will not get funding following a cut of £52 million in the regional development agency's (RDA) budget. It is one of over 100 projects to be told it will no longer get funding. Other projects include Blackpool's regeneration and theatres in Liverpool. Those hit by withdrawals in funding will be able to apply to the new Regional Development Fund from April 2011, the NWDA said. GAY MEN AND LESBIANS "MORE LIKELY TO USE DRUGS" THAN HETEROSEXUALS Gay men and lesbians are markedly more likely to use illegal drugs than straight people, a Home Office-funded study says. The UK Drug Policy Commission, which carried out the study, has called for a review of how drug services treat minority groups. The report reviewed studies on illegal drug use in ethnic minority groups, disabled people and the LGBT community. It found that people who identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual were three times more likely to have taken drugs in their lifetime than heterosexual people. The review estimated that 75 per cent of LGB people had taken illegal drugs at least once, while between 30 and 50 per cent had taken them in the last year. Findings from the British Crime Survey estimate that ten per cent of heterosexuals took drugs last year, compared with 33 per cent of gay or bisexual people. No details were given but a spokesperson said they were looking at the plus points from the 2010 event and would reveal more details early in 2011. MTV IS EXCELLENT FOR GAY REPRESENTATION MTV has been given the first 'excellent' rating in GLAAD's annual index of the most gay-friendly US TV networks. The gay organisation's fourth Network Responsibility Index ranked major and broadcast networks for how well they show LGBT people on television. Out of five major and ten broadcast networks, MTV was rated the best for the quantity, quality and diversity of LGBT depictions. GLAAD said that 42 per cent of a viewing sample contained references to or depictions of LGBT people and also reflected the ethnic and racial diversity of the community. STUDY FINDS GAY MEN DON'T HAVE RISKIER SEX ON HIV PILLS A trial study of gay men taking medication to prevent HIV infection suggests that it does not encourage them to have riskier sex. Viread, produced by Gilead Sciences Inc, is already used for the treatment of HIV infections but is being tested to see if it can be used to prevent HIV infection before exposure to the virus. The study was designed primarily to test whether Viread produced side effects, rather than analysing its effectiveness or effect on behaviour. The International AIDS Conference in Vienna heard today that a study of 400 HIV-negative men found that they were not more likely to take part in risky sexual behaviour when they believed the pills could prevent infection. The evening started off with a performance from local LGBT group Out to Dance Manchester who did a Salsa Demo this was followed by a repeat of Misty re creating the Kylie - All the lovers video and also slow. After that Kevin Lee Britt and his two dancers came onto the stage. American Music award winner performed 5 songs before former Phixx singer Nikk Mager brought the evening to an end with 5 songs including a cover of Black and Gold. GTENTELEVISION TO FILM RE-CREATION OF KYLIE - ALL THE LOVERS VIDEO AT VIEW BAR TONIGHT gtentelevision is to film the re-creation of the Kylie - All The Lovers video at View Bar on Canal Street in Manchester tonight (8/7). The re-creation of the video is part of Kylie night hosted by Misty Chance. The night will also include a chance to win Kylie's new album which came out on Monday. The video is due on the gtentelevision website on Friday. GAY ASYLUM SEEKERS FROM IRAN AND CAMEROON WIN APPEAL Two gay men who said they faced persecution in their home countries have the right to asylum in the UK the Supreme Court has ruled. The panel of judges said it had agreed "unanimously" to allow the appeals from the men from Cameroon and Iran. They had earlier been refused asylum on the grounds they could hide their sexuality by behaving discreetly. Home Secretary Theresa May said the judgement vindicated the coalition government's stance. Under the previous government the Home Office had contested the case, saying it had taken sexuality into account when making its decisions.
