LONDON BECOMES HOST CITY OF OLYMPICS

London has become the host city of the Olympics in a glittering closing ceremony inside Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium. The official countdown began with the Olympic flag being handed to the Mayor of London. This was followed by an 8 minute segment of ceremony showing what the world can expect in London in 4 years time. A huge party in the Mall in London has followed the end of the closing ceremony in China.
DALEY SEVENTH AS MITCHAM TRIUMPHS IN OLYMPIC FINAL

Australia's Matthew Mitcham produced a near perfect final dive to win 10m platform gold with GB's Tom Daley ending up in seventh.
TEENAGER DALEY IN OLYMPIC FINAL IN BEIJING

Teenager Tom Daley qualified for the Olympic 10m platform diving final. Daley who was 15th after the first round progressed following spectacular fourth and fifth-round dives and finished in eighth place with a score of 458.60. The 14 year old will now take part in the final due to take place at 1pm BST on Saturday. China's Huo Liang led the way scoring 549.95 in his six dives.
TEAM GB WIN 18th GOLD MEDAL AT OLYMPICS

Team GB have won an 18th Gold Medal at the Olympics in Beijing. Tim Brabants powered to a superb victory in the final of the men's K1 1000m. The 31-year-old dominated the race from the start finishing almost a boat's length ahead of the defending champion, Norway's Erik Veraas Larsen. Brabants crossed the finishing line in 3:26.323 seconds to win Britain's first ever canoeing Olympic gold medal. Brabants adds Olympic gold to his world and European titles.
BOLT CLAIMS 200M WITH WORLD RECORD

Usain Bolt has added the 200m crown to his Olympic 100m title in an incredible new world record time of 19.30 seconds in Beijing. The 21-year-old from Jamaica broke Michael Johnson's mark of 19.32. Defending champion Shawn Crawford took silver with team-mate Walter Dix getting the bronze. Great Britain's Christian Malcolm clocked 20.40 secs for fifth place.
TEAM GB POWER TO NEW HEIGHTS AT OLYMPICS

Team GB have powered to new heights with the best Olympic performance for a century. Christine Ohuruogu's 400m victory brought Team GB's gold medal haul to 16. Earlier in the day cyclist Chris Hoy became the first Briton to win three golds in a Games for 100 years beating GB's Jason Kenny in the sprint final. Victoria Pendleton won the women's sprint while sailor Paul Goodison landed the Laser class. Ohuruogu's win followed a silver medal for high jumper Germaine Mason. Tuesday yielded a total of four gold medals and two silvers for Britain while a bronze was guaranteed as the team retained third place in the medals table.
TEAM GB PASSES GOLD LANDMARK

Team GB have now passed a landmark in Gold Medals after victory for the men's cycling pursuit team on Monday. It is team GB's biggest haul of Olympic gold medals since Antwerp in 1920. Team GB have now won 12 golds, one more than Sydney in 2000, and three more than Athens four years ago. The team have at least four more strong gold medal prospects on Tuesday which if converted would see them pass the 15 golds achieved in Antwerp.

Manchester City have lost their opening premiership match and Manchester United could only draw their match. Gabriel Agbonlahor hit a stunning seven-minute hat-trick as Aston Villa's late show tore Manchester City apart. The end result was 4-2. Manchester United made an unconvincing start to the defence of their Premier League title as they were held at Old Trafford by an impressive Newcastle. The end result was 1-1
FOUR MORE BRITISH GOLDS AT OLYMPICS IN BEIJING

Britain has won 4 more golds at the Olympics in Beijing. Britain's sailors, rowers and cyclists won gold medals on a day which matched the team's phenomenal "Super Saturday" performance. Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb, Pippa Wilson and Ben Ainslie took gold in the sailing. The men's rowing lightweight double sculls triumphed but the women's quadruple sculls were edged for gold. Rebecca Romero beat GB team-mate Wendy Houvenaghel to cycling pursuit gold. After four golds on both Saturday and Sunday Great Britain's total of 11 golds for the Games moved them up to third place in the medal table. There are more chances of medals later today too.
MICHAEL PHELPS MAKES HISTORY AT OLYMPICS

Michael Phelps has made history at the Olympics in China after winning his 8th Medal at the water cube in Beijing. In getting his 8th Medal he beat Mark Spitz's 1972 record of seven. The 23-year-old teamed up with Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak to claim the historic gold in a new world record time. They held off Australia and Japan to win in a world record time of three minutes 29.34 seconds. Britain finished in sixth but the race was all about Phelps' place in history. Phelps who has swam 17 times over nine days and set world records in seven finals had already won the 400m medley, 200m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 4x100m free relay, 4x200m free relay, 200m medley and the 100m butterfly.
RADCLIFFE DEFIES PAIN TO FINISH MARATHON AT OLYMPICS

Paula Radcliffe has finished 23rd in Sunday's marathon and has not ruled out one last attempt at Olympic glory in four years' time.The 34-year-old was in tears as she crossed the finish line at the Bird's Nest Stadium after a gutsy performance. "It's not the end," she said. "We'll keep our fingers crossed for 2012. "Maybe the Olympics won't happen for me, but I can do it in 2012 if my body holds together. I guess that is what I need now, a bit of luck." The world record holder admitted she was not in the right shape coming to Beijing but pointed to 38-year-old winner Constantina Tomescu as her inspiration to compete at the London Games.
NEW FOOTBALL SEASON KICKS STARTS THIS WEEKEND

The new football season kick starts this weekend with the first weekend of Premier League football. Manchester United start the defence of the title at home with a match against Newcastle and Manchester City are away to Aston Villa. Manchester City's match kick starts at 3pm with Manchester United kicking off the match at 4pm. Meanwhile Village Manchester football club have a friendly against Cheadle Hulme Albion at the University at 11am on Sunday with the full season for VMFC kicking off on 31st August. Rebecca Adlington ended British women's 48-year wait for a swimming gold and could win two more to become one of the Games's most successful swimmers. The 19-year-old was a surprise winner of the 400m freestyle and has the 800m freestyle and 4x200m relay to come. Great Britain's Jo Jackson also got third place for Britain in race too.
5m WATCH OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY

The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics attracted an average audience of five million viewers to BBC One according to initial overnight figures. More than 50% of people watching TV on Friday afternoon tuned in to see the fireworks, acrobats and athletes - with a peak audience of 5.4m at 1700BST. A further 700,000 watched the first day of the games live on the BBC website. But due to China's time difference, TV audiences were down from the 8.68m who watched the Athens ceremony in 2004. Globally there was an estimated TV audience of one billion people for the four-and-a-half-hour spectacular.
LEWIS CLAIMS 5th AS KOVALAINEN GETS FIRST F1 WIN

Heikki Kovalainen captured his maiden win at the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton maintained his championship lead. Felipe Massa gifted the Finn victory after his car ground to a halt with just three laps to go. Massa jumped both McLarens at turn one and the race looked to be his after Hamilton suffered a punctured tyre. Time Glock was 2nd with Raikkonen in 3rd.
LEWIS CLAIMS POLE FOR F1 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX

Lewis Hamilton made his chances of claiming a third successive race victory easier by capturing pole in Hungary. The McLaren driver clocked one minute 20.899 seconds to secure his fourth pole of the season as team-mate Heikki Kovalainen joined him on the front row. Felipe Massa led Ferrari's challenge and will start in third while team-mate Kimi Raikkonen could only manage sixth. Massa lines up alongside BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica with Toyota's Timo Glock sharing the fourth row with Raikkonen.
VMFC PREPARE FOR EUROGAMES IN BARCELONA THIS WEEKEND

Village Manchester Football club are preparing to fly out to Barcelona this weekend for the 2008 Eurogames. The event begins on Thursday and goes on till Sunday and will host 28 events during the event from football to swimming. We are hoping to a report from the guys when they return from the event.
LEWIS FIGHTS BACK TO TAKE WIN IN GERMANY

Lewis Hamilton has moved into a four-point championship lead after a brilliant victory in the German Grand Prix. The McLaren driver led from the start but a comfortable win was put in doubt by his team's decision not to pit him during a safety car period. Lewis then dropped to 5th when he did finally stop under racing conditions. Then team-mate Heikki Kovalainen let the Englishman by and Hamilton was able to catch and pass Ferrari's Felipe Massa and then Renault's Nelson Piquet.
LEWIS GETS POLE IN GERMANY

Lewis Hamilton produced a superb lap to take pole for Sunday's German Grand Prix. Lewis eclipsed Ferrari's Felipe Massa on his final run clocking one minute, 15.666 seconds at Hockenheim. Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen was third behind Massa and lines up with Toyota's Jarno Trulli. Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen share an intriguing third row.
