SEAN HOAGLAND - STAR OF ROCK HAVEN

GTEN: TELL US ABOUT ROCK HAVEN
Rock Haven is a coming of age story of a young boy, Brady, who is struggling with his strong religious beliefs being in contradiction to his sexual desires. Brady and his mother, Marty move to the remote beach front town of Rock Haven. It's here that Brady meets his young neighbor, Clifford, whom he is immediately attracted to and intimidated by.As their friendship grows their desires for each other grow as well and ultimately form into strong emotional and sexual relationship. But Brady's
religious beliefs are always in his mind and cause him to question what he
is doing. His struggle through the film is on going as he searches for a way
for himself to be at peace. Rock Haven is a very dynamic film because it brings in all kinds of themes from acceptance, love, and redemption, to self-loathing, fear, anger, and hatred. All of these pushes and pulls on the main characters create a very
real struggle for the two of them and at often times heart-breaking. On a production side of things, Rock Haven took us 3 weeks to shoot with most of the interiors being shot in San Francisco and all of the exteriors shot in Bodega Bay, a little north of the city. We used a very small close-knit cast and crew which made the shoot very enjoyable. Everyone became very close with each other after working so closely for an extended period of time.
GTEN: READING ABOUT YOU IT SEEMS YOU HAVE ALWAYS WATNED TO BE AN ACTOR IS IT ALL YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE?
I first got into acting in high school and as soon as I started, I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. And really from then it has gotten better. Each step I take is more exciting than the last. Moving from high school theatre to my University where tens of thousands of dollars would go into the design was an amazing feeling. The first show I did in college was You Can't Take it With You and I remember
walking onto the set and it literally was a house and I couldn't believe it.
Then moving from college to Los Angeles and into the professional business
was fascinating. The first time I was on a movie set felt like my dreams had
already came true. So really each step I take just gets better and better
and really reaffirms that this is what I want to do with my life.
GTEN: BACK TO ROCK HAVEN ITS A CLASH BETWEEN RELIGION AND BEING GAY WAS IT DIFFCUILT TO PLAY THE CHARACTOR?
The difficulty came from turning away from my own beliefs in order to play Brady. Brady believes that he can't be Christian and gay. I've grown up Catholic my entire life and having always excepted homosexuality. So it was interesting for me as an actor to step into a character who believed that his own feelings were wrong. It is a very interesting kind of vulnerability. But as an actor, I just take it one step
at a time. What makes Brady feel the way he does? What are the things that
keep him from accepting himself? I keep asking myself questions until the
struggle becomes real for me than, hopefully, translates to the audience.
GTEN: THERE ARE SOME INTIMATE SCENES IN THE FILM HOW WAS THAT LIKE TO DEAL WITH?
Really I just didn't think about it. I literally woke up in the morning, looked at the scene break-down for that day, and was like "Oh,today we have to make-out. Okay." So by not building it up in my own mind, when it came time to do it, it wasn't really an issue at all. And it actually helped for Brady. It was something completely new for him so I just used whatever nervousness or reservations I might have had and used it for
Brady.
GTEN: WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR 2008?
I am currently cast in the play "Tracers" which will be running at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse in Los Angeles in the end of May into June. Beyond that, I will just keep
auditioning and praying for the next thing to come along.
GTEN: HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE UK?
I visited London my freshman year of high school with my drama department. It was a quick trip because we were doing London and Paris in nine days. So I only was able to spend a few days in London but I loved it. Traveling in High School just made me want to travel all the time.
GTEN: WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU INTO?
I listen to everything really. Whatever my current mood might be. But most of the time I am a country boy. I listen to Country music more than anything else.
GTEN: ARE YOU SINGLE?
I have been single since the end of August. My last relationship lasted for a year and a half long-distance and was the best relationship of my life.
GTEN: WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO BE IN 5 YEARS TIME?
In five years I hope to be at the next level of my career. I would like to have a few mainstream films under my belt. I'm not looking to be the next huge A-list star but I really want to be able to live of acting and not have to wait tables. Ideally I
would like to manage my career from the East Coast back home and travel to
LA when I need to. Maybe doing 2-3 films a year and the rest theatre.
